Outward Hound “Roll Along Pet Carrier & Backpack”

Best suited for: Backpack, wheeled transport
Also works for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

The Roll Along Pet Carrier both rolls and converts to a backpack. At 19Hx14Wx10D, it’s larger than the last Outward Hound carrier I reviewed, but it shares many of the same features, including enormous ventilation panels on the front and sides, and roomy pockets — big enough to carry your dog’s leash, poop bags and treats and still leave plenty of room for a wallet and keys.

This carrier handles its various tasks pretty well.…

Outward Hound “Backpack Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: Backpack
Also works for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I’ll just say up front that I like this product a lot. Outward Hound’s backpack is the same size as a school backpack, but it’s been optimized for your small dog’s comfort and for your convenience.

The sides and top flap consist nearly entirely of mesh panels, so your dog has plenty of ventilation. The side seams have been reinforced, so the bag will not collapse onto your pet if the bag is laid on its…

Sherpa “Sport Wheels Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: Wheeled transport
Also works for: Backpack
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This is a fairly well-made product, and part of the attractive Sherpa Sport product line, but I can’t understand why someone would need it. It includes a padded and ventilated compartment for your dog, and a storage compartment above for, presumably, toys, treats, etc. It has a (fairly rickety) extendible handle and can be wheeled around; it also has (acceptably comfortable) backpack straps and a pad that can be flipped to cover the wheels for backpacking…

Snoozer “Roll Around Travel Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Small size only)
Also works for: Backpack, car carrier, travel bed
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★★

I’m always excited about a rolling pet carrier, and this one has some nice features. It also converts to a backpack, it has lots of mesh ventilation panels (though no privacy panels), and it has straps through which a car’s seatbelt can be fastened. It has a couple of good-sized pockets on either side, and it’s well-padded on the side that will rest on the floor of an…

Sherpa “All in One Backpack”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, backpack
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

“All in One” refers to the designers’ suggestion that this carrier can function as a purse, a shoulder bag or a backpack. It comes in one size (12Hx17Lx9W) but four color options. It has a faux sheepskin liner, large mesh ventilation panels, and a couple of good-sized pockets (and another small one). It has only a D-ring inside, not a clip on a lanyard to clip your dog to. The shoulder

PetEgo “Pet Rolling Pack”

Best suited for: Backpack
Also works for: Car carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I love PetEgo’s products, but I’m disappointed by this one. It has great features: It rolls, it has an optional internal divider that allows two (tiny) dogs to share it, it expands with a zipped gusset to provide substantial additional space. It converts to a backpack. It has lots of mesh ventilation panels. These are all excellent things, and when you add in PetEgo’s quality design and workmanship, you’ve got a great carrier. At 9.5Hx21Lx15W, however,  it’s…

Pet Gear “I Go2″ line of pet carriers

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Weekender, Traveler, Escort, Day Tripper, Sport only)
Also works for: Car carrier, over the shoulder carrier
Quality: Unknown
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

Pet Gear offers a line of I GO2 rolling carriers that convert to backpacks. The bags all have straps on the back through which a safety belt can be fastened, so they will work as car carriers too. The manufacturer would like you to unzip the main window and regard the carrier as a car seat as well, but in that case only the small…

PetEgo “Pet at Work Travel System”

Best suited for: Backpack carrier, travel crate
Also works for:
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This carrier starts out as a backpack, holding both your laptop and your small dog, and once you get to your destination, it converts to a small enclosed crate, complete with a padded floor.

Toy breeds will fit best in it, especially in the compact and standard configurations, but when the carrier is fully expanded (16Hx15Lx16W) even Chloe could fit in it. It comes in black and tan.

I own another PetEgo carrier, Chloe’s beloved messenger bag.…

PetEgo “Jet Set Carrier”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Small and Medium sizes only), motorbike carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, short-term backpack, car carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

PetEgo’s Jet Set Carrier, in the Small and Medium sizes, is well worth considering as an in-cabin carrier. The Small is 9.8Hx17.7Lx9W and the Medium is 10.6Hx19.7Lx9.8W — both are officially larger than the airlines’ maximum sizes, but they’re close enough that they’ll work, especially since they’re soft-sided and fairly flexible. The Large size (11.8Hx21.7Lx10.6W) is too long to work as an…

Creature Leisure “Carry Den XT”

Best suited for: Short-term backpack, in-cabin airplane carrier (Medium size only)
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★★

Creature Leisure’s Carry Den XT is an interesting crossover carrier for a small dog — it has handles and a shoulder strap, but it also has backpack straps that tuck away in its side pocket when they’re not in use.

Creature Leisure makes good-quality products, and this is another one. It can be collapsed for storage (the two bars and padded liner tray that give it structure…
