Ferret carrier idea

During the BlogPaws pet bloggers conference, I met the ferret half of the Snotface & Twiggy team, and of course asked about travel carriers for ferrets. Snotface’s owner told me that normal pet carriers don’t work for him — he’s a digger, and he’s figured zippers out — so she’s  modified a lidded plastic hanging file holder, like the kind you’d get at Office Depot, to serve as his carrier. She’s drilled several holes in its sides — big enough for his head to poke out, but not so big that his body can follow — and its sturdy bottom…

Pet Gear World Traveler wheeled carrier

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, car carrier
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★★

As you know, I’ve long been searching for a good wheeled dog carrier that will work for in-cabin plane travel. I own one — the Creature Leisure Pet Pilot XL — but it’s just a hair too small for Chloe. I was excited, therefore, when a reader asked me what I thought of Pet Gear’s “World Traveler” carrier: It sounded like it was about the right size, and it had wheels. I…

Sleepypod Air pet carrier

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, car carrier, travel bed
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This is an unpaid and unsolicited review of Sleepypod’s new Air pet carrier. Sleepypod sent me a carrier, at my request, to try out and review. The company has also generously given me a second, unused Air carrier to give away to one lucky reader. The giveaway will start on Monday, March 29th, and will be co-hosted by my other blog, Dog Jaunt, and by Edie Jarolim’s blog Will My Dog Hate Me.

Dog Whisperer Soft-Sided Carrier

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier
Also works for: Car carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This is a surprisingly well-made and appealing carrier, but I can’t recommend it. Here’s what I liked: It’s sturdily-constructed of heavyweight material, and the zippers are solid and function well. The mesh panels are of good-quality mesh, and they’re huge — no problem with ventilation in this carrier. The zipper runs all the way around the front sides and top panel, so that when the bag is completely unzipped, it can function as a comfortable…

Kurgo “Wander Carrier”

Best suited for: Car carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★

This is a really attractive, well-made product. At 19Lx11Wx12H, it’s far too large to work as an in-cabin airplane carrier (no matter what it says on the box), but that’s not its purpose. According to the manufacturer’s website, it’s meant to keep your pet comfortable and safe on car trips, and it will do that admirably.

Here’s why I like it. It has huge mesh ventilation panels and seat belt loops on both…

Bergan “Comfort Carrier”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Small only, with warning)
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, car carrier
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

Amazon carries a lot of Bergan carriers, so I thought I’d take a look at their most appealing product, the Bergan Comfort Carrier. I ordered the Large size (19Lx10Wx13H), but for airplane use you’d want to order the Small (17Lx8Wx11.5H). That’s officially larger than most U.S. airlines’ maximums, but the carrier is very flexible, so it will actually work. It also looks trim, especially in black, so it…

Snoozer “Roll Around Travel Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Small size only)
Also works for: Backpack, car carrier, travel bed
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★★

I’m always excited about a rolling pet carrier, and this one has some nice features. It also converts to a backpack, it has lots of mesh ventilation panels (though no privacy panels), and it has straps through which a car’s seatbelt can be fastened. It has a couple of good-sized pockets on either side, and it’s well-padded on the side that will rest on the floor of an…

SportPet Designs “Pop Open Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier
Also works for: Car carrier
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I bought this carrier at Target because it was incredibly inexpensive and I’m a sucker for things that fold up into tiny packets. I decided to keep it in the car for emergency use, but today I opened it up to try it out for you.

It unfolds into a carrier that measures 11Hx19Lx10.5W and holds Chloe fairly comfortably. Chloe weighs just over 12 lbs., and I wouldn’t use it for a pet…

SturdiProducts “SturdiTote”

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier, in-cabin airplane carrier
Also works for: Car carrier
Quality: ★★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I saw one of these in person for the first time yesterday, and it’s a very nice bag. It’s made as well as Chloe’s beloved SturdiBag, but it’s an unusual form factor for a pet carrier — taller than it is wide (13Hx12Lx12W). It has lots of mesh ventilation panels, including one that encircles the bag at just the height your sitting pet’s eyes would be — and your pet would…

PetEgo “Pod iLove”

Best suited for: Permanent bed, travel bed, car carrier, bike carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, stroller (with Quadro Stroller frame)
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

There’s a lot to love about PetEgo’s Pod iLove, a round, domed carrier for the smallest pets. As always with PetEgo products, it’s sturdy and well-designed. Like the Sleepypod, it converts from your pet’s bed to a car carrier, but it also converts to a bike carrier and can be carried conveniently over your shoulder (unlike the Sleepypod, it has a contoured side that fits…
