Loveabledog “City Chic” carrier (from How’s Your Dog)

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier
Also works for:
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This carrier is available on Amazon, from a vendor called How’s Your Dog, but it appears to be the product of a Chinese company called Loveabledog. I bought it because it looked promising: It’s priced high enough that it should be a good-quality product, and it was advertised as “fully collapsible,” which is interesting in itself but also suggested to me that it might flex enough to fit under an airplane seat. I have to…

Kwigy-Bo “Michael” messenger bag

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier
Also works for: Stealth transport, people avoiding puppy bling
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I’ve been hearing good things about Kwigy-Bo bags, but I’ve been having a hard time finding some to look at in Seattle. Today I came across this messenger bag at Scraps, a local high-end dog store, and I liked what I saw. This is a solidly-constructed, good-quality carrier. At 18Lx6Wx11H, it’s large enough to hold most small dogs (though it’s too small for Chloe). It has three good-sized pockets

Kurgo “Wander Carrier”

Best suited for: Car carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★

This is a really attractive, well-made product. At 19Lx11Wx12H, it’s far too large to work as an in-cabin airplane carrier (no matter what it says on the box), but that’s not its purpose. According to the manufacturer’s website, it’s meant to keep your pet comfortable and safe on car trips, and it will do that admirably.

Here’s why I like it. It has huge mesh ventilation panels and seat belt loops on both…

Bergan “Comfort Carrier”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier (Small only, with warning)
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, car carrier
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

Amazon carries a lot of Bergan carriers, so I thought I’d take a look at their most appealing product, the Bergan Comfort Carrier. I ordered the Large size (19Lx10Wx13H), but for airplane use you’d want to order the Small (17Lx8Wx11.5H). That’s officially larger than most U.S. airlines’ maximums, but the carrier is very flexible, so it will actually work. It also looks trim, especially in black, so it…

Sherpa “Tote Around Town”

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier, stealth transport
Also works for: In-cabin airplane carrier (with warning, see below)
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This is one of the better Sherpa bags I’ve seen. I still don’t love the fabric or the fake leather, but the overall effect is attractive and practical. It comes in two sizes: Small (10Hx15Lx7.5W) and Medium (13Hx17Lx8W). I saw it in black; it also comes in pink and brown, and a couple of tweed patterns. It has a nice faux sheepskin pad inside — I…

Sherpa “Hobo Sling”

Best suited for: Over the shoulder carrier
Also works for: In-cabin airplane carrier (with warning, see below)
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I just checked this carrier out at my local Petco, and for once I don’t hate the fabric. The body of the purse is well-made and fairly appealing (I saw the red and black version; it also comes in pink and brown). There is a comfortable, removable faux sheepskin pad inside, as well as one of the two very small pockets the designers have provided. There are two…

Sherpa “All in One Backpack”

Best suited for: In-cabin airplane carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier, backpack
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

“All in One” refers to the designers’ suggestion that this carrier can function as a purse, a shoulder bag or a backpack. It comes in one size (12Hx17Lx9W) but four color options. It has a faux sheepskin liner, large mesh ventilation panels, and a couple of good-sized pockets (and another small one). It has only a D-ring inside, not a clip on a lanyard to clip your dog to. The shoulder

United Pets “Soft Bag Jeans”

Best suited for: Bling, over the shoulder carrier
Also works for:
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★

I just saw this carrier at a particularly chic Seattle pet store called Urban Beast — one of the few places in the U.S. you can find United Pets carriers, it seems. The carrier is all-cotton, well-padded and well-made, but its main appeal is as eye-candy for your dog. The stylized dog’s head you see is a padded flap that flips over the top of the carrier to close it. It comes in two sizes: Small (10.5Hx13Lx7W) and Large (10.5Hx16Lx7W).

United Pets “Huggy Pet Carrier”

Best suited for: Bling, over the shoulder carrier
Also works for:
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★

From the back, this carrier looks like you’re carrying a teddy bear (though one without any features). Your dog faces forward, out the front. The carrier is pure bling, but it’s well-made and well-padded, and includes a sewn-in leash clip for your dog’s collar or harness. It comes in two sizes: Small (16.5Hx12Lx8W) and Large (16.5Hx16Lx8W).

United Pets products, and this one in particular, are a little tricky to find in the U.S. Contact…

Solvit “Deluxe Tagalong Pet Bicycle Basket”

Best suited for: Bike carrier
Also works for: Over the shoulder carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★

Solvit’s Deluxe Tagalong Pet Bicycle Basket can be unclipped from your bicycle’s bracket and, with the shoulder strap attached, also function as an over the shoulder carrier for your dog. The interior measurements are 10.5Hx13.5Lx10W, so it’s meant for toy breeds. Other nice features? It has an optional sunshade, a water bottle holder, a leash clip, and several useful pockets. This is a nicely-made product and was reviewed favorably in the Bike Commuters blog (but be…
