ProSelect Bolt-On Coop Cup (for wire crates)

I bought this crate bowl on-line, from Amazon, after I realized that the Lixit crate bowl I owned was plastic (many dogs are allergic to plastic bowls, and I don’t want to find out that Chloe is one of them). It arrived today, and I’ve just installed it. It’s a straightforward object: The bowl is held in a steel ring welded to a small rectangular plate, which is attached to your dog’s crate by a wing-nut, exerting pressure on another rectangular plate. While the bowl itself is stainless steel, the supporting steel ring and attachment apparatus are …

Lixit Carrier Cage Crock (for wire crates)

Chloe and her Lixit crate bowl

I found this crate bowl at Petco, and I like it because it came in a small (10 oz.) size (it also comes in a 20 oz. size), it was inexpensive, and it fastens easily and solidly to a wire crate. The bowl fits onto a notch in the holder and you turn the bowl to secure it — simple, straightforward, and impossible (or at least hard!) to dislodge. I suppose that a bored or motivated dog could chew on the exposed base, if the bowl weren’t in place, but Chloe has never shown …

Midwest “i-Crate” Folding Crate

Best suited for: Everyday crate
Also works for: Hotel or vacation rental crate
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

This is the crate I should have bought when I first brought Chloe home. I’ve ended up with it, after a variety of collapsible fabric crates, a Marchioro “Ithaka Clipper 6″ crate, and a Sky Kennel crate, but I wish I’d started here.

First things first: I bought the iCrate Single Door Folding Crate, Model 1530 (which is the size Medium, at 30Lx19wx21H). Chloe could fit in the next smaller size, but for her …

Getting your dog’s crate ready for plane travel

The folks at PetRelocation.com have put together a video, featuring mascots Bruno and Chatty, about getting your pet’s crate ready for airplane travel — it’s short but thorough, and well worth a look.…

Firstrax NozToNoz “Sof-Krate N2″

Best suited for: Hotel or vacation rental crate
Also works for: Everyday crate, if your dog doesn’t scrape to escape
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★

This was the first crate we bought for Chloe, and although it wasn’t the best choice for a puppy, we really liked it. It folds down and sets up easily, and two of its doors extend to the ground, giving your dog good visibility as well as ventilation (the third door is really a roof that zips back). Unlike the Creature Leisure Den, this crate has …

Pet Gear “The Other Door Steel Crate”

Best suited for: Hotel or vacation rental crate
Also works for:
Quality: ★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★

We bought one of these crates from Orvis, for use in a vacation home where we don’t want to leave a crate set up all the time. It comes in three sizes: Small (21Hx27Lx18W), Medium (27Hx36Lx24W) and Large (28Hx42Lx28W). The crate arrived assembled, so I spent some time learning how to collapse it and set it up again.

Things I like? I love all the door options, I like being able …

Petmate “Portable Pet Home”

Best suited for: Hotel or vacation rental crate, if your dog doesn’t scrape to escape
Also works for:
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★★

This collapsible crate comes in seven sizes, ranging from Mini (10Hx12Lx9W) to Extra Large (36Hx42Lx30W). It has some nice features: It collapses and sets up easily, it has privacy panels on its side mesh ventilation panels, and it comes with a faux sheepskin pad. It’s flimsily-made, however, and there is no clip to keep the two door zippers together. A motivated dog could destroy this crate in very little time. …

Precision Pet Products “Bone Voyage Pup Tent”

Best suited for: Temporary crate or occasional use
Also works for: Car carrier
Quality: ★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I bought this crate because its price was slashed almost to nothing in the offer I found, so I had low expectations for it. We’ve been pretty pleased with it, though — it has several nice features, and if your dog is calm and not prone to scratching, this will be a useful product for you. It comes in five sizes, ranging from Extra Small (10Hx12Lx10W) to Large (28Hx36Lx23W).…

Marchioro “Ithaka Clipper 6″ crate

Best suited for: Everyday crate
Also works for: Cargo-area airplane carrier
Quality: ★★★★
Price: $$$$
Overall rating: ★★★★

I bought this crate (26.75Hx36.5Lx25.5W) in desperation — Chloe had just clawed through the corner of her Creature Leisure Den and I needed a crate for her that very day. I couldn’t find a Vari-Kennel crate in the three pet stores I went to, so in the last one I bought this crate instead. I’ve regretted it ever since, because the door fits poorly in its opening and the door latch is balky and …

Creature Leisure “Den”

We own three of these Dens, two medium ones (for travel and for a vacation home) and a large one (for everyday use at home). The Den comes in three sizes: Small (17Hx22.5Lx15.5W), Medium (24Hx29.5Lx22W), and Large (30Hx38Lx28.5W). We like the Den because, assembled, it is sturdy and solid; and it collapses with the simplest of approaches — the four aluminum poles that provide structure at …
